Arrhenius Definition

  1. Acids produce hydrogen ions (H+1) in solution, so any substance which has H+1 as part of its formula is an acid.
    1. HCl(g) ---> H+1(aq) + Cl-1(aq)
    2. H2SO4(aq) ---> 2 H+1(aq) + SO4-2(aq)
  2. Bases produce hydroxide ions (OH-1) in solution, so any substance which has OH-1 as part of its formula is a base.
    1. NaOH(s) ---> Na+1(aq) + OH-1(aq)
    2. Mg(OH)2(s) ---> Mg+2(aq) + 2 OH-1(aq)
